Toddlers and Diapers

Weaning Your Toddler Off Diapers Is Easy

If you are potty training your toddler, he is she might wear night nappies for a much longer period of time than they do in the day; these usually have a guideline in the region of two years, and this is especially the case if your toddler has a tendency to sleep deeply.

The secret here is not to be unduly concerned and to be relaxed about your toddler sleeping with nappies. All you need to take into account is that there should be a bit of practical planning and a good old-fashioned dose of patience.

Start removing night nappies once your toddler has woken up with a dry nappy for most mornings.

For little ones that insist on not wearing a nappy at night (this is usually the case with the older children and girls), simply pop the nappy on once they are fast asleep.

This should be quite easily done after your little one has fallen asleep and has been sleeping for about ten to 20 minutes, as this is likely not to disturb them at all.

The secret of training your toddler is to make it fun, fuss-free and pay as little attention as possible, and soon your toddler will be the proud wearer of underwear and going to the toilet all on his or her own

Dry Nights

Dry Nights equal a Good Night’s Sleep

When looking for the perfect nappy for your baby there are a couple of things that you should consider. These are comfort, luxury, excellent quality, and going the extra mile.

Remember that nappy rash is caused by

• Nappy rash is commonly caused by extreme wetness.
• Nappy rash is caused by the ammonia in stale urine or the digestive enzymes found in faeces.
• When you dry your baby’s bottom, always pat dry gently with a towel of tissue instead of rubbing it as the skin is super-sensitive.
• You should never bath your baby more than twice a day, as the skin can then dry out and cause nappy rash.

When you are looking for a nappy for your baby look for comfort as a nappy should be as soft as a second skin and should be a perfect fit. Excellent quality is also of great importance; there should never be any leaks, and the materials should never irritate the skin of your baby.

The baby’s skin requires extra-special protection because it is subjected to very specific demands compared to the skin of older children and adults. The skin of a baby experiences skin sensations more intensely than that of adults. Remember that mom’s know what’s best for their babies.

If you are looking to invest in nappies, always ensure that the nappy is luxurious, comfortable, of outstanding quality.

What Moms Think Of Nappies

Ask Moms about Nappies and You Will Get Excellent Advice

They say that mothers know best when it comes to the tender loving care of their little ones.
When it comes to keeping the bottoms of babies dry Moms will be able to offer the kind of advice that no-one else would be able to give.

• You will change nappies at least 4000 times for every child you have, therefore it is worth doing properly.
• Select a nappy that is gentle on your little treasure’s skin. Most parents use disposable nappies in today’s world, so ensure that the fit is silky and smooth on your little one’s bottom.
• Absorbency is vital, as this will prevent your baby getting wet and having lengthy periods being exposes to urine and faeces.
• Absorbency will also cut down on night time changes.
• The nappy must allow your baby’s skin to breathe, therefore ensure that the outer layer is not plastic to the touch.
• Always select the right size to fit your baby perfectly; if the nappy is not a good fit and is too tight then your baby will be left with red marks around the waist and the legs.
• Select nappies that have lotion strips which contain aloe that will soothe the skin of the baby.

Sixty four percent of moms think that skin protection is achieved through nappy performance and 36% of moms think that skin protection is achieved the same way. Moms want their nappies to be able to keep baby dry; they must be leak-proof, cost-effective and the fit should be snug.

Giving Your Child Confidence at the Dentist

Visiting the Dentist is Often Scary for Little Ones

Toddlers can be dramatic at the best of times, therefore it is important to introduce them gently to the first visits to a couple of fear-induced situations.

Most of us don’t like to go to the dentist, so imagine how frightening it must be for the small ones  when they go to the dentist for the very first time in their lives.

Firsts are always exciting combined with a feeling of trepidation; remember that firsts establish a foundation and set a precedent for the rest of the child’s life.

It is imperative that children have a positive attitude towards dentists. Always acknowledge your child’s fears and feelings that usually come hand in glove with a visit to the doctor or to the dentist.

Many believe that talking about a visit to the doctor or dentist makes the situation worse, but this is not so; talking about your child’s feelings and acknowledging their feelings will assist in releasing the fear and managing them.

Fear is usually the number one issue that dentists encounter on the child’s first visit, but once the child is confident and happy to come to the dentist, this is half the battle won, and the procedure in the dentist’s chair is simple thereafter.

A child should first visit the dentist by the time the first tooth makes its appearance, which by rule of thumb is six and twelve months old and then the child should have check-ups every six months thereafter.

Children take their queue from you, so remember to say positive things about the dentist in front of your toddler as this will instill a positive feeling in your child.

Food and Your Baby

The Nutrition children receive in the first 1000 days of their lives; this includes from the time of conception to the age of two years, could affect their health forever.

Find a product, such as Nestle that uses scientific research to make certain that complementary feeding meets the nutritional needs of babies and toddlers at this vital stage of their development. They offer an age-based programme that will guide and help parents to select the correct foods for each stage of their development.

Breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months of a child’s life and if possible should continue with the introduction of appropriate complementary foods on the advice of your pediatrician or your clinical sister.

How does development and food feature in the different stages of a child’s life?
• From 6 months onwards the development focus is on learning new tastes, textures and how to eat.
• From 7 months onwards the baby’s taste buds mature.
• The development focus from nine months upwards involves budding well-balanced eating habits by exploring and having richer tastes, textures and a variety of foods introduced to the diet. The baby now learns to chew and also how to incorporate independent eating.
• From a year onwards the infant focuses on learning to eat on his own as well as learning to bite into food.
• From 18 months and upwards the baby learns to enjoy a variety of textures that involves biting and chewing.
• From the age of 2 years and upwards biting and chewing becomes more skilful and efficient.

By introducing a wide variety of interesting foods really early on in your child’s life will encourage the child to grow up enjoying a vast array of different foods and tastes. This is a lot easier than one would believe; variety, fun and imagination all add to making those mealtimes a whole lot of fun for you and your little one.

What Is BPA Free?

What is BPA Free and Why Does This Appear on Certain Products?

• When you go shopping for baby products you will find that many products advertise that they are BPA free; this usually refers to baby bottles.
• BPA means Bisphenol A which is a chemical used in a large range of plastics and can have an adverse effect on the health of your baby, therefore using BPA free bottles to feed your infant is best.
• Spokeswoman for Cansa, Lucy Balona, said that certain baby bottles carry the Cansa seal to help South African consumers to identify safe products for their babies.
• Head of Cansa research, Dr Carl Albrecht, delivered findings that have reinforced the belief that certain chemicals found in plastic bottles, such as hormonally active Bisphenol-A (BPA), were unsafe as they potentially caused cancer as well as other serious problems.
• Cansa conducted this research over three years to study scientific evidence that was for and against BPA, and concluded that BPA was unsafe, particularly in vulnerable groups like babies and children.
• BPA is also harmful to adults.
• Babies and children are the most vulnerable group as their brains are still developing and their bodies lack the type of enzymes that the body uses to fight off BPA.
• Babies and children eat ten times more food per day.
• It is believed that certain polycarbonate bottles and cups that contain BPA seeped into fluids, such as milk products.
• Exposure to boiling water or heat released up to 55 times more BPA.

As a result of these findings, Cansa would like all BPA containing products to be barred and for BPA free products to replace those that contain BPA for baby drinking bottles, as well as in tin can linings and outdoor water bottles.

Why Organic Is Best For Babies

Why Organic Is Best For Babies
Many parents are concerned about what they put into their babies mouths when it comes to feeding. Obviously when it comes to the very little babies, breast is always best, but when the time comes to introducing solids it might a good time to look at giving your baby organic foods only.

According to Dr Vyvyan Howard, choosing to feed your baby organically may be the single most important way to give them the best start in life.

The harmful residues that are found in non-organic foods expose your baby, and what you want for you baby right from the outset, is for your little one to thrive on a healthy diet.

Why you should not go the non-organic route:
• Your baby’s body is vulnerable; therefore it is essential that your baby has the purest and the safest foods given to him or her right from the outset.
• Non-organic foods might contain chemicals and impurities that could prove to be harmful to your baby.
• The kidneys of a baby are undeveloped and immature and the system is not developed enough to excrete any harmful substances from the body, resulting in any toxins remaining in the system of the baby.
• The digestive system of a baby is a lot more efficient than that of an adult, resulting in the absorption of nutrients into their systems, but at the same time if there are any harmful substances these will also be easily absorbed.
• The levels of pesticides are based on the results done on adult systems, and not on the size of a baby or a child’s body, and this may result in unacceptable levels of harmful substances in foodstuffs.

Why organic?
• Organic food contains no hydrogenated fats, pesticides or additives including tartrazine, MSG and aspartame.
• Organic farming releases far fewer greenhouse gases.
• By selecting local organic seasonal food you will significantly reduce your carbon footprint, and do your bit towards thinking green.
• Only choose food where animals are completely free range and are not given growth hormones and harmful antibiotics.
• Organic farms offer wildlife an idyllic existence; many of these include birds, bees, insects and plants.
• Organic standards ban any genetically modified crops and ingredients.

When it comes to giving your baby the best start in life, it is best to feed your baby organically.

Healing the discomfort of nappy rash

Diaper or nappy rash is a type of dermatitis that affects the buttocks, genitals and thighs of babies. Although it looks red and angry and may cause discomfort, it is seldom serious. The condition usually lasts only a few days, but if it persists it may indicate a secondary skin r infection.

When babies wear nappies constantly, this creates a hot and humid environment that may encourage continuous irritation of the skin in the groin area. So let him kick happily without his nappy so that the air can get to his nether regions.

The rash is usually caused by urine and stools left for too long in contact with the skin or inadequate drying of the baby’s skin after a bath. But it can also be caused by an allergic reaction to soap or to the chemicals in the laundry detergent.

Symptoms include red and/or raw skin on the buttocks, genitals and thighs or skin that looks as if it has been burned or scalded. There is a strong smell of ammonia and in boys, an inflamed penis. The best defence against nappy rash is a dry bottom
